What is Traction Alopecia?

Traction Alopecia happens when the hair or scalp is subject to long-term or recurring tension. This tension can come from several hairstyles or hair habits. Using too much heat on the hair, detangling the hair too often or too harshly, or even just styling your hair too often can damage your hair in different ways. Other styles like box braids, twists, dreads, cornrows, and ponytails can also cause a level of tension that, over time, severely damages your hair. In the early stages of traction alopecia, you will notice some breakage happening with the ends of the hair, around the crown of the head, or right at the scalp in patches. The edges of your hair are some of the most sensitive hair strands and are most susceptible to breakage. So it may also seem like you have a receding hairline.

Traction alopecia is very treatable with adjusting your hair care habits. However, when left unaddressed, it can cause permanent damage. When you choose a specific style for your hair, and you know it will be in for a longer period, try your best to relieve tension on the scalp. As you prepare for a new style, make sure you do lots of conditioning and deep conditioning on your hair to properly moisturize. It’s also great to keep switching up which hairstyles you are doing. This ensures you are not prolonging any tensions in the same areas of the head for too long.


As tempting as it may be to jump from hairstyle to hairstyle, sometimes the least invasive styling is the most effective for thicker hair. Let your hair be free and embrace all your wonderful textures by letting it hang loose for at least a couple of weeks. Your hair will be thankful for
